The local SEO checklist we run for every Philadelphia client

7 min readBy Aniyah Lashay Jones

Local search is the highest-intent free traffic a service business can get. Someone searching “roof repair near me” is not browsing. This is the order we work in, and why the order matters.

Foundation (week one)

  1. Claim and verify Google Business Profile. Unverified profiles rank poorly and can be edited by strangers.
  2. Pick the right primary category. This single field influences which searches you are eligible for more than anything else on the profile.
  3. Make name, address, and phone identical everywhere. “St” versus “Street” across ten directories genuinely costs you visibility.
  4. Set precise service areas. Claiming the whole tri-state area dilutes relevance for the neighborhoods you actually serve.
  5. Add real photos. Ten current photos of your team, work, and storefront outperform any stock image.

On-site work (weeks two and three)

  1. One page per service, one page per city. A single “Services” page cannot rank for eight different queries.
  2. Write titles that match how people search. “Emergency HVAC Repair in South Philadelphia” beats “Solutions | Home”.
  3. Put the phone number in the header as a tap-to-call link. Most local traffic is mobile and impatient.
  4. Add LocalBusiness structured data. It helps search engines associate your pages with your physical location.
  5. Fix mobile speed. Compress images, drop unused scripts. Slow pages lose both rankings and calls.

Proof and authority (ongoing)

  1. Build a review habit. Ask every satisfied customer the day the job closes, with a direct review link. Volume and recency both matter.
  2. Respond to every review. Especially the bad ones, briefly and without defensiveness.
  3. Get listed in the directories that matter for your trade. A handful of relevant citations beats a hundred spam listings.
  4. Publish something local monthly. A project write-up naming the neighborhood you worked in does more than a generic blog post ever will.

How long it takes

Profile and citation work often shows movement in two to four weeks. Page-level rankings usually take two to four months, longer in competitive categories like legal or restoration. Anyone promising page one in thirty days is selling you something else.

We run this exact checklist as part of our SEO and content engagements. If you want a copy of the audit we use, just ask.
